Eguishmein - Alsace France

Lunch in Switzerland * Black Forest Germany * Sankt Peter's
4 countries and lots of driving

We spent the day traveling and enjoying the sites from Vils to Eguishmein.  First we detoured to Switzerland, just because we were kind of close and the kids thought it would be fun to cross the border.  We ate lunch at a rest stop by some train tracks.  Probably not the most scenic place in Switzerland, but we enjoyed the drive from northern Switzerland into the Black Forest region.

Our favorite ski run at Snowbird is Black Forest, now we can say we've been to the real Black Forest.  We kept our eyes open for any indication we could stop and buy a Black Forest cake, but no luck.  We enjoyed our drive through this hilly forest and stopped at Sankt Peter's to visit the church and buy some strudel from the church ladies who were having a craft and food fair.  We also enjoyed zipping along the German Autobahn with no speed limit.  We are driving a manual Renault with 6 gears and Eric managed to get it up to 160 km/hour on the Autobahn and people were still passing us.

We had thought we'd stop in Freiburg to see the temple, but when we double checked the temple address we realized there are two Freiburg cities in Germany and the temple was 6 hours away.  Funny!  We continued on to Eguishmein, 15 minutes south of Colmar to find our hotel and get dinner.  After a day of eating car food we needed some real food.  Eguishmein is a darling Alsce town with heavy German influence with their wood timbered homes, flower boxes, and spaetzle on the dinner menu.  We wandered around the town a bit before dinner and then enjoyed dinner in an outside courtyard with a fountain. I enjoy eating outside - we should do it more often in the states.  (We had spätzle, pork, and tarte flambé (German pizza), and fresh Munster cheese with salads - Munster is a local cheese).  It might have been our best restaurant meal yet (we've had about 6 or 7 restaurant meals thus far)

After dinner we drove the short 15 minutes to Comar to wander around it's quaint streets and canal lined restaurants (it has one canal through the center of town).  We enjoyed the gothic cathedral (built in the 1200s) and green tinned roofs of the market and customs house.
