Pompeii - aaah Italia

Pompeii
6.87 miles walked

Good thing going to Pompeii was our only goal today, because it took the entire day.  We did not want to loose our awesome parking spot so we decided to take public transportation to the Pompeii ruins.  Two people in town told us the bus would take about 30 - 45 minutes to get there.  I don't know which bus they were referring to, but the bus we got on took 90 minutes and weaved through every little town from Vietri to Pompeii.  We arrived in Pompeii about 1:00 - just in time for lunch.  Gratefully we had foraged for food before leaving, so we enjoyed a prosciutto and mozzarella di buffalo sandwich in a little room inside Pompeii that we believed could have housed a Roman Gladiator.

We enjoyed wandering Pompeii for 3 hours; getting lost at almost every turn.  The mosaics and frescoes are amazing.  We even lucked out and happened upon a guard letting small groups of people into two small locked homes.  The house of the Faun was our favorite - the largest home in Pompeii, over 27,000 square feet.  When we got to the home of the tragic poet, we found a small black dog sitting right in front of Pompeii's most famous mosaic; a black dog with "beware of dog" written in Latin.  We laughed at the stray dog.  It was fun to wander the old Roman roads and see the ruts from the chariot wheels.  It wasn't hard to imagine people running around this town nearly 2000 years ago before it was destroyed by Vesuvius.

We decided to find the train to take us back to Vietri - yeah, only a 30 minute train ride!  (However, when we got to the train station we had to wait 60 minutes for the train to get there) - Ah, Italia!

We enjoyed a final gelato and looked at the Mediterranean tonight as we took our passeggiata around the town piazza.
