The Italian Highway

Volterra
8+ hour driving

Today was a travel day.  We left Vietri Sul Mare early (well, early for a vacation), 9:00, and headed north on the Italian Autostrada towards Volterra.  I was impressed with the Autostrada - great roads and every 30 miles or so there was a full service pull out with shaded parking spots, gas, clean bathrooms, and dining.  Not just fast food, but Italian dining with tables and chairs and food choices from pasta to steak.  Ok, it was little bit like a Chuck-a-Rama buffet, but it was 100% better than most rest stops on I-15 between SLC and Barstow!  There was a 25Euro toll that we had to pay at the end of our drive, but I wasn't bothered too much considering how nice the freeway and rest stops were.

We decided to leave the Autostrada south of Siena for a scenic drive through the Tuscan countryside.  I've never seen so many hills in my life.  We curved up and down and around for 60 minutes weaving our way from Pienza to Siena enjoying the colors of the farms, hills, hill towns, castles, and everything in between.  We were 2 hours late to meet our contact at our apartment in Volterra.  Oops - it's OK, I called him and it's Italy, 2 hours late is nothing.

Our apartment in Volterra is awesome.  We are in a 2 building complex on top of a hill with a swimming pool and at the moment only one other family from Ireland staying here.  The only sound outside our window is strange Italian crickets (half frog, half cricket).  We are about 20 minutes down the hill from Volterra.  We were tired from our drive and decided to go out to dinner rather than cook.  So, we pulled an Italian and started dinner at 9:00 p.m. And didn't get home until 10:30.  We will all sleep well tonight!
