Acadia to Boothbay Harbor

 Boothbay Harbor, ME

Sun Rise Otter Cliffs * Tidepooling * Canoeing * Pizza on the waterfront

Despite a rough night's sleep because there is no A/C in our little cottage and very little natural airflow we were up at 4:30 a.m. to go watch the sunrise. Lucky for us Otter Creek is literally surrounded by Acadia National Park, and it was a quick 7-minute drive to Otter Cliffs where we determined would be a great place to watch the sun come up over the Ocean. We must have been right because the small parking lot was already full.

Gratefully everyone was quiet as the sun slowly rose - either because it was 5:00 a.m. or they were just drinking in the beauty like we were. The colors were amazing as the sun’s light penetrated the sky - and then, in an instant the sun crested. It was intense and looked like the horizon bent inward with the weight of the sun. Then in just a few minutes the sun was up and we were on our way back to our cottage to crash for another couple of hours!

Originally, we thought of taking another hike this morning, but at the last minute decided to head for a sand bar that connects the mainland to Bar Island and is exposed during low tide. We enjoyed walking around the shallow, warm waters looking at mostly sea snails and empty crab shells. We did find a sad crab that was missing a claw and looked like he might be on his way out. After a quick hike to the top of Bar Island, we drove to Long Pond where we rented a canoe and squished all 4 of us in the canoe for a couple of hours paddling and looking at the beautiful homes that lined the banks for the lake. The thick forests that come right up to the lakes edge never gets old!

It was a quick 2 1/2-hour drive to our next stop, Boothbay Harbor where we have a hotel right on the beach board warm with a fun view of the harbor that is full of boats. We enjoyed pizza and ice cream on the boardwalk and looking at the fun beach shops tonight.
