Welcome to the Big Apple

Bike Central Park * 5th Ave * Time Square

We took the Amtrack train from Philadelphia to NYC today. Returning the car was slick - it was directly at the train station. The Amtrak took us right into NYC’s Penn Station and then we walked 1 mile pulling our luggage the entire way to our hotel in the Theatre District. It’s a nice enough hotel, but there’s something about it that reminds me of a cruise ship or all-inclusive resort. It’s a bit tacky and modern at the same time with a bar and hang out balcony for the young crowd. We won’t complain as the rooms are clean and big enough for NY and the price was right.

Lara and the kids set out on their first adventure picking up some bikes to pedal around Central Park. On the recommendation of someone, we took a detour to the Papaya King for lunch. Lunch was average - a very basic, cheap hot dog - but the experience was perfectly New York. Complete with a civil argument between one of the of the customers and the owners about buying an empty cup. Even though the lunch was nothing notable, we enjoyed the experience.

We road our bikes the entire length of Central Park and then back down again. At one point we stopped for a bit so that we could talk to Emma on her mission. We try and keep her up to date with our adventures, but without overdoing it so that she doesn’t feel left out while she is serving in Uruguay.

We couldn’t have time our return to the hotel more perfectly - we arrived at the same time as Eric. It was good to have him with us again. He has been on 2 antibiotics that last 10 days trying to get the pneumonia under control. He feels much better, but not 100% still. Tonight, we found a yummy wood fire pizza restaurant and walked around crazy Time Square. It feels like walking the Vegas strip - all types of people, lights, noise, and street performers. Because it was Monday night, not a lot of the theaters were open so it was less crowded than it might be regularly.
