Soldiers past and present

Annapolis * Gettysburg

Today we left DC and made our way towards Harrisburg, PA. Our first stop was Annapolis. Annapolis is one of those charming towns that you wished you could just sit down and relax for the entire weekend. Its harbor is filled with boats and its streets are filled with charming homes and shops. We visited the Annapolis State house that is the longest continuously used state house in the country. It also served as our capital building for a bit.

After the state house we walked to the US Naval Academy to watch the summer Plebe’s for this lunch formation. It was a kick watching 1200 brand new naval recruits' line up on the plaza and sing the naval fight song at the top of their lungs. It was a bit like they were being hazed as they all tried to out sign each other on the plaza. It also looked SO hot for the poor groups that ended up in the sunny parts rather than the shady parts. We made a quick visit to the naval chapel which was unique in that it was meant to service all faiths. It had a beautiful Christus statue in the back of the hall rather than Christ on a cross.

We had a bit of a drive to Gettysburg and arrived about 4:00 - enough time to enjoy the visitors center before it closed. There’s a really nice museum that outlines the civil war. We’ve learned that there is always too much information to digest in a museum, so we did our best to take in our favorite display in each area rather than try and read everything. After our museum visit, we drove around the battle ground and admired the many statues and memorials. At the top of a hill, we got out to see over the valley. It’s always so hard to think of these sites as killing fields when today they look so beautiful.
