Just another NYC kinda day

The Today Show * United Nations * St. Patrick’s * Guggenheim * NY Yankees Game

We woke up at 5:30 a.m. so that we could be to the today show by 6:30 a.m. in the hopes that we could give the Today Show hosts a fist bump and maybe get on TV. We were early, but not early enough to be on the 1st row, we had to settle for 2nd row. Which was plenty close. We enjoyed the interns filming the Today Show “shout outs” that would be aired later on in the show. Gratefully it was comfortable in the shade. Finally, at 8:30 the hosts of the Today Show came out and Charlie was able to give the weatherman, Al, a fist bump. We watched as they did the 8:30 am segments from outside, including interviewing 3 of the NY Yankies players. Charlie also scored a free Yankees T-shirt.

On our walk over to the UN we stopped at a recommended bagel stop but had to wait 30 minutes for our food. It was good - but no bagel is worth a 30-minute wait.

Our tour of the UN was interesting. None of us knew much about the organization and its history. Our guide was from Senegal and understood the conflicts all over the world that the UN was involved with. We visited several of the assembly rooms, including the General Assembly. The art in the building is also very interesting - most of it is donated from other countries and shares a message of peace and love. One particular piece was a mosaic of Normal Rockwell’s painting “Do Unto Others”. We learned that civilians could apply and donate their time to a UN Peace Keeping mission. Exhausted from our early morning start we returned to our hotel with an Uber for a nap before finishing the day.

We had no problem collapsing for a power nap. We’ve been going, going, going since we got here. We had street food for lunch - halal - we all ordered a beef gyro except Eric who got a hot dog. After lunch we wandered around St. Patrick’s Cathedral and enjoyed the beautiful stain glass and huge organ. We are pros at the Subway now and had no problem making our way to the Guggenheim Museum on the upper East side. We had a free ticket to this Museum so picked it over the Met - we’ll have to save that one for next time. It was a pleasant museum, and we enjoyed the Kadinsdky exhibit in the circular area as well as the familiarity of painters in the permanent exhibit. We saw painting from Picasso, Monet, Manet, Degas, Pizarro, Van Gogh, and others. We really enjoyed the Kadinsky exhibit and learned a lot about an artist we knew nothing about - except Sydney who had studied some of his work in her AP art history class.

Still tired from our morning we spent the next hour eating an ice cream cone and relaxing in on a shady bench in Central Park. After recovering our energy we jumped on the subway again and headed to Yankee Stadium for their game against Cincinnati. It was fun being in Yankee Stadium with all the fans. The stadium is gorgeous. We left after the end of the 8th inning when the score was 1-4 (Yankees losing). We should have stayed though because by the end of the 10th inning the score was 6-7 (Yankees still losing - but lots of action in the last 2 innings).
