Niagara Falls to Small NH Lake

Niagara Falls * Erie Canal * Bennington, VT

Today was the longest driving day of our entire road trip. We had to travel from Niagara Falls, Canada to Enfield, NH. We started our day early with a quick walk from our hotel to Queen Victoria Park and the Niagara Falls overlook in Canada. Specifically, a great view of Horseshoe falls! We had the overlook nearly to ourselves and marveled at the force and speed at which the water rushed over the Horseshoe falls.

After crossing the border, we took the Maid of the Mist boat ride past American Falls and Bridal Falls to the swirling waters of Horseshoe falls. We got so close that it was hard to open our eyes and see in front of us because of the pelting mist from the waterfalls. Good thing we were given handy plastic ponchos, otherwise we would have been drenched. As it was, our uncovered hair was really wet. It really put the force of the falls into perspective. On our drive out of town we looked up the miraculous stories of those who have survived going over the falls - whether intentional or not.

Last minute we decided to make stop at one of the locks along the Erie Canal. Lucky for us there was a “lock demonstration” going on and we were able to watch as the locks filled and drained with water moving the boat through the lock. Actually, it looked like there could easily be a bad accident where someone could be seriously injured. Also, last minute today was a quick stop at the Bennington Revolutionary war monument in Vermont. A 300+ ft tall obelisks in honor of this battle.

We arrived at our Lake Cottage a bit later than we hoped, but Stewart had the Caitlyn were all ready for Sydney and Charlie to go out for a spin in the lake while Eric and Lara ran to the cute town market to find something for dinner. We can see how a lake vacation in a cute lakeside cottage would be so relaxing a fun. The water at this lake is calm and warm enough to enjoy. The pace is slow and relaxing.
