Old world meets new world

Hershey’s World * Lancaster County * Valley Forge

Today we meandered from Hershey PA to Philadelphia PA and our first stop was Chocolate World. We didn’t really know what to expect from the experience. We had pre purchased tickets to ride the Trolley around town and then the kids were going to make their own candy bar.

The Trolley ride was a bit cheesy, but we learned a lot about Milton Hershey and his inspiring story. First, we learned that unlike most big chocolate companies, Hershey uses fresh milk in its chocolate. In fact, each morning a number of trucks pull up from the nearby dairy farms to deliver milk. We also learned the Hersheys started a school for orphans that has since developed into a boarding school for under privileged children, and it is totally free, financed by a large foundation.

After the candy bar making experience and a chocolate milk shake, we were on the road again forward Lancaster County to catch a glimpse of the Amish communities in that area. We visited a “farm” that highlighted the Amish's simply lifestyle as well as shared some of their crafts. It’s amazing to think that this community has been able to shun technological advancements and live amongst all the surrounding growth.

Our last stop today, or better a drive through, was Valley Forge; only 20 minutes outside of Philadelphia this is a beautiful national park. It was a beautiful day and we saw plenty of people out walking, biking, and picnicking. Riley was sleeping so we didn’t stop and get out of the car until we came to Washington’s winter quarters. It was generous for a temporary home. Seeing all these American History sights has excited us to brush up on our American History.
